I’ve seen some people argue that she’s a type nine, but I have to disagree with that. Type 9s aren’t the only enneagram type that can struggle with being unsure of who they are and changing their behavior to match the people around them. It’s interesting because Shar’s doctrine about “letting go” and “embracing oblivion” definitely seems like an unhealthy type 9 philosophy, but it’s important to realize that Shadowheart does not actually want to let go of all feelings or follow Shar’s ideals; she just wants to be accepted by Shar and the other followers of Shar, like a social six would. If Shadowheart was a type Nine, she would have more easily followed Shar’s doctrine instead of constantly questioning whether or not she’s doing things right or questioning Shar’s methodology. Beatrice Chestnut explains this well for social sixes: “The name given to this type by Ichazo is ‘Duty,’ which doesn't mean they ‘do their duty’ (though they often do) as much as it means that they focus on ‘what their duty is.’” Shadowheart has not necessarily fused her personality with Shar and her teachings to avoid her own feelings, but rather she has aligned herself with an authority figure so that she has guidance and she doesn’t have to make her own choices. Shadowheart’s also much too reactive to be a type nine. She is constantly on defense, even since the start of the game. She is initially distrusting of the protagonist and most characters, and she’s also one of the most secretive. When she gets into a conflict with Lae’zel, instead of avoiding confrontation to deny her own anger, Shadowheart tries to slit her throat because she is afraid. In conclusion, I think Shadowheart is a social six that tries to act like a nine because that is what Shar teaches, but in reality she is too in tune with her own anger and anxiety to be a nine; her character arc is about turning away from unhealthy authority and learning to trust her own decisions, not about learning to accept her own emotions and embrace her own identity.

Shadowheart is an Origin character and Companion in Baldur's Gate 3. She is a Half-Elf Cleric with the Acolyte background. Origin characters can be played as the main character, otherwise, they can be recruited as a companion early on.
