A Hero to His Hometown: Hugo grew up in Lantrusta, where he was famous amongst the townspeople for his effortless athletic prowess, being the strongest and fastest young man around. When the war started, he was beguiled by the heroic tales of a much older hometown hero who had been in a previous war. This, combined with the people of his town urging him to use his excellent physical skills to join the ranks, influenced him to recruit. Initially, his main incentive for joining was the respect he got from men and the attraction he got from women in his hometown, revelling in his status as the settlement's “Golden Boy”. When he starts to suffer from post-traumatic stress, his motivations grow deeper, but he still keeps the people of Lantrusta in mind. He worries about what the people of his hometown would think if they saw him act like such a ‘coward’ in war, as he puts it. The Hunk: Is described as being very tall, lean, and sporting wavy, dirty blonde hair that is rarely ever seen messed up or out of place. Even Quinn, despite detesting him at the start of the book, can’t help but admit how gorgeous she finds him in an early chapter. Jerk With A Heart of Gold: He tends to get on people’s nerves with his cocky, sarcastic, and mocking attitude, but at his heart, he is a noble and dedicated soldier willing to support those in need. This is how his relationship with Quinn develops - a rare moment where he is genuine, caring, and supportive towards her in a time of grief, which allows the rivalrous pair to realise their hidden feelings for each other. Meaningful Name: Of both the amusing and traumatic variety. His last name, Stacey, means ‘fruitful’, a fitting name for a known womaniser who is shown to father up to five children in the epilogue at the end of the book. His first name, “Hugo”, could also count as it sometimes translates to “mind”, which fits due to the majority of his struggles stemming from his inability to cope with the fear and anguish that plague him due to the war, as well as the injury to his head that put him into a coma. His character arc revolves around conquering the demons of his mind and becoming the soldier he was always meant to be.
