War Moniker: Silent Memoir One Sentence Descriptor: An affable and mute soldier whose disability and capricious love life cause him trouble and strife. | TROPES THAT APPLY TO THEM | Beware The Nice Ones: As a mute, quiet, dedicated soldier, Stefan often comes across as one of the kindest, most hard-working, and thus most likeable people within the Magnae Forces. He is characterised by a typically affable disposition and is almost always the sweet, supportive, go-with-the-flow type of person. But regardless of his sweet nature, Stefan is often very ruthless when he has to be. In one of his first few scenes, he almost cuts a fellow soldier for making fun of his inability to talk, and at certain points in the book, he is quick to criticise and condemn friends and comrades for unsoldier-like behaviour. He also has no qualms when it comes to brutally killing the fauxangel enemy on the battlefield and is even pleased to see Dagim parade a decapitated head of one of these aliens through the camp one day. Dark and Troubled Past: Stefan grew up as a troublesome orphan in Vohdkaz Town. He was a rambunctious young boy with no family or friends to speak of, who would spend his time terrorising the people of the town, such as manipulating and swindling street vendors to get free food and clothes, insulting women who passed by to the point of tears and stealing from them, and throwing rocks at old men for his sadistic amusement. This behaviour only stopped once a fauxangel cursed his tongue, taking away his speech for life. Stefan would become depressed and even further isolated following this, until he met a deaf girl from his town who helped him become accustomed to life as a recently disabled person. His romance with Anais over the years, as well as his joining the Magnae Forces as a soldier when he was a teenager, was what finally allowed him to find purpose in his life and become the humble, kind, but passionately dedicated fighter we meet in the book's main story. Fastest Fighter Alive: Stefan is the third strongest soldier in the Magnae Forces behind Dagim and Hugo, but in terms of speed and agility alone, he is the best the forces have to offer. His most common form of attack is using throwing knives to clear down swarms of enemies by swiftly sneaking through the battlefield. Humble Hero: Although he displays great feats of masculine bravado, Stefan is not as outwardly egocentric and bombastic as other top soldiers such as Dagim and Hugo. Stefan is often content with being in the background as long as he is able to do what has to be done. In the final act of the book, he faces the prospect of sacrificing himself just to ensure victory in humanity’s final battle with a stoic resolve. Meaningful Name: Of the ironic variety. The surname Machin roughly translates to one who is a boor or a lout, which opposes the way people would describe the quiet and refined Stefan. The Quiet One: Not by choice. Ever since the fauxangel cursed his tongue in his youth, he could never speak a word again. But since then, Stefan has leaned into this role. He uses his speed and agility alongside his new quietness to gather intel by sneaking up on and observing others, and to attack fauxangels through stealthy guerrilla warfare tactics. It is these sneaky tactics that allow him to fool Theola in the book’s final battle, sneaking his way into the gargantuan demon’s heart and killing her from the inside in an act that allows humanity to win the war once and for all at the cost of his life. Star-Crossed Lovers: Him and Anais to a certain extent. Due to him being a top soldier and her being a civilian, they cannot see each other during the war and are forced to be apart. Stefan’s greatest struggle throughout the book is convincing Anais to stop following his faction's war camps and risking her safety just to see him. Near the end of the book, he decides to take a leave of absence from his war duties just to be with Anais for a few days. This ends up being his greatest regret, as during these few days, the majority of the Magnae Force’s soldiers are wiped out by an attack from a giant demon in a battle he was supposed to be a part of. His guilt over missing this battle is what influences his decision to sacrifice his life in the final battle.
