Benedict of Nursia (who lived from c.March 2, 480 – c.March 21, 547 AD) was a late Antique Christian monastic who is renowned for being the founder of the Benedictine congregation. Saint Benedict founded 12 communities for monks at Subiaco in Italy, before founding the monastery at Monte Cassino in southern Italy. The Benedictine Order emerged following Saint Benedict's death as a confederation of autonomous congregationsSaint Benedict's magnum opus, the Rule of Saint Benedict, contains an extensive set of rules for his monks to follow. Heavily influenced by the writings of Saint John Cassian, the Rule also reflects an influence from strong the Rule of the Master.The main source of information outside of the Benedictine Rule is derived from Pope Saint Gregory I's Dialogues, which is hagiographic in nature.
