[1/3] 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 SO8 is surely one of the most interesting Enneagram subtypes and the understanding of the type may vary to a certain degree. Believe it or not, there are people that believe that this subtype is a sweet and caring papa bear that wants to protect the oppressed with all their heart. This is actually ironic, because the justice seeking of SO8 is more akin to gang leaders and social justice warriors. To give us a better understanding of this type, let’s examine the fundamentals of this type, the ego that is fixated with Vengeance. Fixation on Point Eight is called Ego-Vengeance, also called Over-Justicemaker. This fixation arises from a sense of abuse in childhood and derived from Historical Ego, also known as Gut triad. This fixation could be understood as a fixation to take revenge on perceived injustice regarding their physical environment. The stress of being fixated and imbalance creates the compensatory mechanism of Cruelty (Ichazo on Point 8) which is transformed into a passion called Excess or Lust. This is a passion for excess, a passion that seeks intensity, not only through sex, but in all manner of stimulation: activity, anxiety, spices, high speed, the pleasure of loud music, and so on (Character & Neurosis). It is a passion to seek more aliveness in a greedy and sadistic way in order to compensate for one's lack of aliveness. As a Gut type, Lust could be understood as an action-oriented seeking of aliveness driven by the motor instinctual impulse. E8 is the most impulsive of the Gut types, releasing their raw, unfiltered impulses to their physical environment. This mechanism of seeking intensity is actually a coping mechanism to their inner emptiness, due to the suffering of being abused. The intensity of being abused is compensated with this intensity seeking satisfaction and pleasure in “a war against the abuses he suffered” (27 personajes en busca del ser). However, remember that E8’s justice seeking isn’t grounded in a social sense of justice. It is a greedy, sadistic, and antisocial character, unlike E1 who is over-moral and socially virtuous. “𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝟴 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁.” (Dramatis Personae) When this antisocial justice-seeking ego meets the adaptational-related Social instinct, this would produce a contradictory character. An antisocial character that wants to socially adapt. Ichazo called the neurosis “Social Relations” - attempting to keep everyone happy (The Arica Training) while Naranjo assigned “Complicity” - a manipulative friendship in which ties are established aimed at power (Dramatis Personae). We could understand this character as a character that builds friendship with the “oppressed”, a solidarity based on revenge to the same “oppressor”. It’s not a friendship based on loyalty and trust; instead, it’s a friendship based on revenge and self-interest. To take vengeance and justice of their inner sense of abuse, the SO8 shows support and solidarity to other oppressed and mistreated groups, “working together” to “overthrow” the SO8’s abuser.

背景

For the Social Eight subtype, a sense of powerlessness or injustice is overcome by being part of an aligned group, usually in a leadership role. This subtype’s anger and aggression are mediated by the group’s needs, and harnessed for a common agenda. Loyalty to friends and social causes take precedence over personal feelings and needs.
