背景

Margaret Brigham-White is a mentally ill religious fanatic and widowed mother of Carrie. Following the death of her father, she begins to attend a fundamentalist group and meets Ralph White, whom she soon marries and is raped by shortly before his death. She later becomes an extremely abusive mother, often inflicting harm upon herself and Carrie, as well as locking Carrie in a “prayer closet” whenever she does something that Margaret deems sinful.
