𝗸𝘂𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗶 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗸𝗶 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝟳 this page has been begging for an argument, so i have emerged from my chambers to do the world a service. it also seems that nobody can quite agree on how to approach kuguri as a character, which i think is just part of his design. however, as a lover of mystery i am here to provide my way of understanding mr. mysterious himself. warning for being wordy… i got a bit passionate. let's gooooo! (note: i have not yet read his feature… i am hoping it gets translated fully soon…) 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 kuguri is defined by his desire to understand despair. a formerly celebrated prodigy who fell from grace and lost the piece of himself that defined his existence, right when he truly believed he could be happy. then, he is told that despite his grief, he has not yet come to know the taste of true despair, which becomes the most pressing issue of them all. if he does not know despair, then what truly is despair's definition? in turn, he decides to become both despair's embodiment and detective, as if he were a method actor becoming one with his newly appointed role or a spy working on a secret mission. he has always been a person who enshrouds himself in mystery, and this new role is another way to play with mystery, by allowing himself to be everything and nothing at once. becoming despair's dealer means that he can defy the thing he is most confused by, god himself. despair becomes the building blocks for his impenetrable walls and the toy he finds most pleasure in playing with. however, his soft heart remains intact, as he yearns for the wall to be broken, and his pain to be realized. in dissecting his contradictory nature, one must look at the bigger picture of his character, kuguri as a whole instead of an "old vs. new" fragmented view of him. kuguri himself is a dreamer, a romantic, and a snake that keeps biting his own tail. despite trying to outrun his past self, he is only repeating his same mistakes. from being a piano-playing doll to beating god through the weapon of despair, kuguri is a character who is always trying to outrun himself, losing himself in the possibility of who he could be and what he could lose, instead of what he has. kuguri, who purposefully toys with others' assumptions to build an image of mysterious allure. kuguri, who was never offered play as a child and yearns for nothing more than to understand the joys beyond despair. kuguri, who met a boy who taught him that the piano truly could be fun, the thing he desires most. all these conflicting parts add up to equal a character trapped by fear who loses himself in his own self-indulgence… he is an enneagram 7. 𝗸𝘂𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗶 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲 + 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗲𝟴 the head triad (e5,6,7) are driven by a need for security and functions to protect oneself from the dangers that may come up while navigating the world. this manifests in patterns of preparation through mental awareness and planning. the world is experienced through the mind of the head triad as it retreats from the unpredictable nature of things outside of the scope of their thoughts. kuguri is a fearful and avoidant person. kuguri's main internal battle comes from his avoidance to acknowledge pain and suffering he felt when he lost frederick and the piano, as well as his attempt to eliminate himself from any oncoming stress that may find him, such as getting attached to and subsequently losing raito. instead of latching onto the past, he latches onto the future, carefully planning how he can adapt to be best suited for whatever new troubles come his way. hence the creation of the upfront and shameless persona he portrays throughout the story. however, these actions are not just shown in the "new kuguri," but also in the solitary and mild-mannered kuguri of the past. during this time, kuguri stays guarded in a different way, fearing connecting with others due to a perceived threat of alienation. he struggles with connection, pondering how friends are exactly made, trying to intellectualize this disconnect. kuguri's first instinct when confronted with distress is to indulge in daydreams, imagining the world as music or falling snow, dissociating from his body and the present moment altogether. from afar his affinity for strength training and sex may appear as a connection to the physical; however, when learning why he indulges in these acts, it is clear his purpose is a reaction to his detachment. he is desperate to be able to feel something, so he pushes his body to its limit, when in reality, he is so detached from his body that he can hardly feel the pain of his skin getting pierced or the fact that his arms arent even there at all. — "But, if I tried it too… would everything go away? The pain in my missing arms… and everything I can’t stand thinking about… would it all just disappear?" - Op.25 No.11 [1/5]
