Ok, analysis is overkill for this textbook INFJ, but let's analyze him anyway. Ni-Ti: He follows his own internal system of logic and often gathers abstract insights about others. 1) Jem is a deep thinker and full of wisdom despite his age. It's not simply his life experiences that lead to that, it's more of a natural talent for having insights about the deepest parts of other characters even after little interaction. It's like an ability to quickly recognize and summarize the "core" of a person's being. This is when Fe joins the Ni-Ti pair. Example: understanding Tessa's deepest fears about her identity as a hybrid within only a few weeks of knowing her, like the library scene in Clockwork Angel when he immediately knew something was wrong because she looked thoughtful. He's completely comfortable giving "deep" existential and philosophical advice like it's the most natural thing for him to do. He speaks in metaphors often, which is characteristic of N types, like the famous candle and light metaphor he gives Tessa to make her feel better about herself. 2) He also has this quiet aura about him because his perception of the world is intuitive and introverted (Ni). The conclusions he makes about the information he gathers is completely internalized (Ti). It's clear he has a well of thoughts within but they don't all come out. These thoughts are actually often critical observations of other people and situations, and may take people by surprise when they come out eventually. For example: see 3) above. It shocked Tessa to think he believed the institute (including her) only pitied him, and to see how negative his inner thoughts actually are. Ni-Ti is a deeply curious pairing and allows Jem to explore even the darkest and most critical thoughts about himself and especially how others see him. Likewise, despite his love for Will, he doesn't shy away from giving Tessa insights into Will's destructive nature: "When Will truly wants something, when he feels something, he can break your heart." 3) His Ni-Ti also makes him stubborn with his thinking process, like refusing to let the institute waste resources searching for his cure, and refusing to turn into a Silent Brother initially despite everyone begging him to do so. To others, these decisions just didn't make sense, but they made sense to Jem. 4) Just a side-note that Jem's quips and sarcastic humor despite his "gentle" aura is a great example of Fe-Ti humor, which is why he makes a great pair with Will (an ENTP). Both of these types use humor that hits at the heart of things because they use sharp insights (Ti) about other people (Fe). Fe-Se: Not only does he demonstrate his care for loved ones through physical action, but his symptoms of stress or emotional pain are also expressed physically. 1) He KNOWS it's dangerous and even reckless to take intense physical actions to save others in his condition, but he does it anyway and puts himself and his own health at risk. Example: Chasing after Tessa when she was kidnapped by that automaton in Clockwork Princess despite a) knowing he is at a weakened state from deliberately not taking his Yin Fen and b) the impossibility of chasing a running carriage on foot. He also didn't call for help despite being surrounded by his fellow Shadowhunters. He just took things into his own hands and bolted. Fe-Se in INFJs can manifest impulsively and recklessly under stress, in moments of panic, or in moments of intense excitement. It's almost manic, because the inferior Se is connected to a feeling function. All logic leaves the room. 2) You would think Jem would woo Tessa with words, letters or poetry because of his gifted way with words and insight into others, but he uses physical touch instead, like fixing her hair or kissing her impulsively in a carriage. Even early in the series when he spontaneously ran up to Tessa before going on a mission with Will and kissing her hand, saying "Mizpah". Those moments all took Tessa by surprise. Again, his overexcitement inhibits his ability to control his desire to connect through touch. The bedroom scene in Clockwork Prince drives this point home. 3) Because of the Fe-Se pairing, INFJ anger and hurt is expressed externally through words and actions. It's difficult to control it or keep it inside. These expressions are sometimes out of control and, again, reckless. Usually resulting in hurting others or themselves. Example: Striking Will in the face outside the drug den after feeling betrayed by him, then destroying the one object that is precious to him (his violin). Finally, everything he believed Tessa saw him as (a sick patient in need of a nurse) came out in a single painful monologue, despite him never showing signs before that this was how he thought she saw him. It's like a volcano erupted, and all his painful Ni-Ti insights came out in a single moment.

James "Jem" Carstairs is an inactive Shadowhunter and a former Silent Brother. Jem comes across as kind, calm, gentle, quiet, exceedingly patient, and quite intelligent.
