I think types with an Ne––Si axis would make more sense for Willie. The Ne––Si axis tends to manage perception in a non-linear fashion: Si accumulates object impressions into collections with a fixed context, and Ne explores adjacent relationships to real-time mental objects in an expansive way. Keep in mind that real-time mental objects don't have to be new; they can also be drawn from memory. Ne types can reference a memory, which bounces to a related memory, and then another, and so on. This is where Willie comes in. When he is about to be executed (and without the linguistic means to make a more persuasive argument), his mind quickly and reflexively scans his entire mental collection of American culture memes, referencing each in term, in random fashion, in an effort to make any kind of emotional connection with Miller and the G.I.s. It is the epitome of non-linear association, and I interpret it as conscious Ne rapidly referencing a loosely-formed Si mental collection.
