People somewhat underestimate how “intellectual” SP9 can be. I’m not saying it’s as intellectual as the head types, but it can study topics simply out of curiosity. The appetite of SP9 is not limited only to eating or sleeping; it can branch out in other directions. The voracity of SP9 is not limited to food or sensory stimuli; it also extends to information, knowledge, and intellectual acquisition. Here the pattern is very similar to food, because it still works as a mechanism of distraction and emotional anesthesia, rather than authentic learning or cognitive enjoyment. Other authors such as Helen Palmer mentioned a bit about this: “Nines have the habit of replacing essential desires with inconsequential substitutes, such as too much food, too much television, too many novels or elaborate interests in hobbies. The appetite also extends to collecting large amounts of information about a secondary activity.” As mentioned, the appetite of SP9 is not limited to the sensory, such as food or excessive rest, but also expands into the intellectual realm; they can accumulate large amounts of information on a subject of interest, researching something that is not central in their life, but that takes the place of a true personal commitment. In this sense, their voracity is directed toward the trivial elevated to the important, a way of filling the void with data, topics, novels, stories, books, or curiosities that keep them entertained and away from confrontation with what they truly desire. They may read books, essays, articles, simply to distract themselves from their emotions or problems in an activity that feels comfortable. Naranjo also makes some mention of this in Dramatis Personae: “However, this thirst for love is not only transformed into physical appetite, but also into another less visible type of voracity, which leads them to invade others’ space, to curiosity, to the search for novelties through travel and even to the need for distraction through things like television or hobbies.” The incessant search for novelties, often through travel or experiences that entertain but rarely transform them; and also the need for permanent distraction through hobbies or any secondary activity that allows them to escape confrontation with their essential desires. They immerse themselves in books, series, hobbies, courses, or diverse information, seeking to fill their minds with information to try to fill that emotional emptiness they have, to keep the mind busy with information to distract it from the emotions they are afraid to feel. In the book on E9: “In the self-preservation Nine there is also a very mental voracity, which is quickly exhausted. It is incapable of depth, only superficially satisfying a passing curiosity, often due to an impulsive thought that feeds back on itself.” The appetite of SP9 also manifests in an appetite for ideas, data, or information that arrives suddenly, but soon loses strength. But it is incapable of depth, for instead of sustaining a real interest or developing a deeper understanding, the Nine merely superficially satisfies a passing curiosity. What activates this mechanism is usually an impulsive thought that feeds on itself, that is, a sudden spark of curiosity that awakens another and another, without direction or structure. The Nine scatters in chains of information or secondary interests that entertain and anesthetize, but rarely consolidate into authentic learning. Thus, it goes from one thing to another, accumulating information, like someone picking at different dishes without stopping to savor any. Naranjo also mentions this again: “I think, for example, of Rubens, who was not only a painter but also an ambassador, and who not only received the people he had to deal with for political matters while painting, but also had a book read to him at the same time.” This example highlights how some SP9 can satisfy their curiosity and interests on different fronts at the same time, integrating the creative, social, and intellectual into a single experience to satisfy their appetites.

Ichazo called SP9 "Appetite", someone who has a passion to satisfy his own hungers, a constant stimuli that compensates for the registration of one's necessities. Naranjo described this more in depth, conservational sloth results in carelessness about one's own survival needs, this then manifests as lack of awareness of what's actually needed, so the need for survival is replaced with a constant with a constant longing for comfort, food, distractions, sleep and other sensory stimuli. SP Nines do not connect with feelings, desires and power, the Self-Preservation Nine focuses on merging with comforts and routine activities, such as exercising, eating, sleeping, reading or doing crossword puzzles. SP Nines are practical people and are the quietest and like to be alone the most.
