Oh my dear Effy, they could never make me hate you. Effy is complex, she is clever, but she doesn’t use her intellect for her own benefit or others. She engages in self destruction. Others could see Effy and ask her “you have such potential, why do you waste it like that?” Effy is constantly trying to feel something, anything, that can snap her out of the cage of her own mind. She is selfish, reckless and can be cruel. But she clearly has a lot of trauma, and is very depressed. “How can Effy be relatable if everyone falls in love with her immediately and everyone cares about her? She’s got so much privilege!” They liked the idea of Effy. They liked what she presented to others, her beauty, her mystery. However, most weren’t interested in who she really was - messed up, full of trauma, and dealing with complicated emotions. Effy was like a flower full of iron.
