"I'll sleep when I want to. You want to fight about it." -Zoro to Sanji I already know what you're thinking. You see my typing at the top of the post. Right now your mind is going, "How could someone who's so rough around the edges be type 9 over type 8?" There are many reasons for this, so buckle up buckaroos. Let's start with the most basic: instinctual stackings. Sp/Sx is a homebody. They like their creature comforts. If Sp is first, a person is going to be more inclined to stay at home where all of their Sp needs can be met. Since So is last they aren't as likely to leave to interact with others. The Sx energy is then channeled into making the home livelier and more enjoyable. If an sp/sx doesn't have a home base of operations they will still carry their creature comforts with them. Think Hobbits. They are the perfect example of what Sp/Sx looks like on average. By contrast Sx/Sp is much less comfortable. Sx first always brings intensity. For Sx/So that intensity is channel outwards into the social sphere. For Sx/Sp that intensity is channeled inwards at one's self. This causes a person to be far more brooding and internally conflicted. The Sx instinct craves intensity, while the Sp instinct craves stability. The Sx instinct craves a higher calling and adventure, but the Sp instinct craves safety. The two instincts are constantly at odds. These are war-torn wanderers caught in love-hate relationships. Think Drow or Dothraki. So let's take a closer look at Sx 9. Most Sx descriptions are terrible because they assume a romantic relationship focus, and don't factor what the Sx type is like outside of a relationship at all. The word for Sx 9 is unity. Most descriptions say something to the effect of the Sx 9 is looking for an ideal romantic partner with which they can merge with on a deeper level. While this is true it's not the whole picture. Sx 9 seeks unity with everything. They want a common understanding between friends and family so that relationships flow smoothly. They seek a oneness with nature and their surroundings. They want that deeper connection with both people and the physical world around them, so that life flows smoothly. Zoro seeks unity with the world around him through his sword training. It's about becoming one with his swords, and the discipline of his martial practice. It's about understanding how the universe vibrates so that he can cut steel effortlessly (Rewatch his battle vs. Mr. 2 on Alabasta). His speeches before unleashing new sword techniques always reek of Sx 9. "Sight. Hearing. Smell. Taste. Touch. Thought. And unto the six mortal senses... Good. Evil. Neutrality. And further unto each, Purity and Corruption. These are the 36 Earthly desires of this world. I am facing the muzzle of a cannon at you. You are a pistol. I am a cannon. In timing and power, my weapon surpasses yours." Zoro wants interactions with his crew mates to flow smoothly too. Often in vain he will tell Luffy and the others, "Don't get into any trouble." Trouble is the opposite of peace and tranquility. It's what Zoro cares about, and it's where his mind is at. In the back of his mind he's thinking, "If they get into trouble, then I'll have to bail them out, and I don't want to have to do anything." That's the general type 9 mindset. 8w9 is like a sleeping volcano or lion. The anger is more hidden under the surface. When healthy they gently rule over all they purvey. They'll happily grant you permission to do as you please, but you HAVE to ask first. Their response will most likely be, "Sure go ahead. I'm not stopping you." However, if you assume some of their power or control without asking, it can be taken as betrayal. Then the lion bears its fangs, and the volcano awakens. When unhealthy they go way overboard in their retaliation. (We already have a good example of this in Kaido) Zoro never acts as the purveyor. Even as second in command he doesn't demand anyone ask his permission to do anything. Whatever the captain says goes. 9w8 is more like a sleeping bear. They just want to be left alone. Don't poke the bear, and the bear won't attack. Edit: There are a few other anime examples of 9w8s with similar personalities. Naofumi from Shield Hero and Soul from Soul Eater come to mind.
