IN DEPTH PERSONALITY ANALYSIS (Part 1) Clark is a complex but rather tragic character within the movie, What makes him compelling is that the Backrooms do not simply trap him physically—they embody everything he is emotionally unable to confront. Though the Backrooms movie leaves a lot of ambiguity of Clark and pretty much everyone else, that is the purpose of the film — however, I believe there is sufficient evidence to type Clark just enough; and that is through his therapy sessions with Mary Kline. His first crucial introduction to him as an individual is with his therapy sessions with Mary — he is contained for the most part, the first thing Mary talks to him about is being alone — to which he he responds with that he is not lonely, she contextualizes what she meant by saying “I did not say lonely, I mean alone.” Clark can initially seem passive, but that passiveness is far more about holding a grudge and escaping reality to gain control of the night be broke a glass waking up his wife. Where everything that he felt was already on the brink of collapse occurred that night — he repeatedly speaks aloud, proclaiming what he has done for his wife, and how he was deeply cheated despite his efforts “Someone needs to bring in money!” To where he complains “someone needs to get off their fat ass!” Regarding his ex wife to which he paid for her law school and tells Mary upfront almost confrontational “I pay for that house.” He quickly loses his temper during their exercise throughout the therapy session, to which he apologizes for after screaming and ranting about what he’s done, one distinct thing that stands out is he refuses to be referred to as a ‘failed architect’ as Mary says to which he rebuttals raising his voice “I am a fucking architect!” An 8w7 SP8 874 deeply yearning for agency, autonomy and control of the efforts they contributed to their life and to others they’ve trusted, especially to one they feel crossed them deeply The “failed architect” scene is particularly revealing. Many viewers read it as wounded pride. I think it’s deeper than pride. When Mary calls him a failed architect, she isn’t merely criticizing his competence. She’s threatening his identity.

биография

Clark is characterized as a struggling owner of Cap'n Clark's Ottoman Empire. During an entire-store sale there, he discovers a maze of endless spaces on the other side of his basement wall, which he immediately obsesses over. This decision could possibly be a window into his mind at the time, during which his entire store was on sale with the tagline "Everything must go!", likely implying that Cap'n Clark's would soon close permanently, which may also explain why he seeks therapy. It's implied that Clark's mental health has slowly deteriorated over his time obsessively staying in and trying to understand the Backrooms, hence the line he says at the end of the trailer for Backrooms: "It's beautiful. Am I right?".
