I am rewatching the show and i don't think she was villainous in the slytest .To most people in the audience she may not be as easy to love as Sybil because Sybil is a more moral character by today's standard while mary's Te Ni nature makes her more future oriented when seeing her future life she wants to imagine the best she has been brought up knowing she had every attribute a young lady could ever hope for but even though she acknowleges the shallowness of this criteria she does live based on it doesn't seek to detach herself completly but try to make the best of her condition her vision is quite tied to practicality then what is the best metaphorically .The fact that she said of mathew he might end up lord chancellor someday when he was at risk of losing the inheritance was VERY relatable to me .I think she does attribute worth to a man based on cleverness and accomplishement which goes back to her Te dom .So i personally don't think she would of refused mathew if he had nothing ,if you watch the show thinking stereotypically she might seem to you like a gold digger but she had the chance to marry Evelyn Napier and tony gillingham and refused them even though they had wealth and could provide her with a position so when it comes to richard Carlisle i think she thought he could be a good compagon to her since they had much in common but then she realised it was the worst of her that they had in common while mathew was the best of her .So yes i don't think one should hate mary or stereotype her because of these decisions .She can be kind to those she holds dear like Anna which was quite a difference if you see how others interact with the staff if she was a snob that just execrates the poor she would have been mean to the servants i think edith was the one viewing the servants as lesser being before the war even though that changed which brings us to the drama with her sister:I personally think it was entirely justified for her to expose edith in front of Bertie because yes i don't think he deserves to be lied to nor that edith should undermine Mary just because she is happy ,she didn't miss any opportunity as if her sole goal was to be better than mary I think edith was the jealous scheming bitcjh after exposing the story of kemal pamuk just out of spite just because she isn't beautiful and so is a victim of the system doesn't mean she has the right to be an ass .I really believe Edith was an objectively bad person full of spite and jealousy not to mention she was a bigot and a racist and yes her character is more nuanced than that as well .I think Edith is the one that seems deep but then you find out she is really shallow while mary is the one who seemms shallow but reveals to have emotional depth
