Jose Menendez as Social 1, with 3 Image Jose Menendez should be understood as a man who strives to become successful, or be seen as successful, to compensate for deep seated feelings of shame associated with the severe devaluation of self in conjunction with traumatic sexual abuse from a cold, austere mother who dismissed his needs or invalidated then. Jose then was imprinted that low self-worth is primally associated with vulnerability and devaluation, and therefore, high self-worth precluded the ability to experience this. He says to his mother on the phone, as he is leaving Cuba, that he will one day show her how much she hurt him. The implication is that she ignored or discarded his attempt to validate his hurt feelings to her, the caregiver and therefore source of well-being in the world. The gut triad typically deals with anger with respect to one’s learned experiences with the mother in early life. Jose felt unable to truly criticise or express his resentment to his mother, which he was forced to repress, because he didn’t really see himself as presently someone who was in a position to criticise. This is therefore why he wants to be seen as a successful and well-read man by virtue of his efforts, as it validates what was discarded indifferently long ago. You’ll see he read a book on being a successful salesman, which is all about image and the impression you set on others That he called his mother and attempted to confront her into admitting what she did is a hallmark as to how much it has affected him, and continues to do so. His 3 image is where he tranfixes his 1 energy; into being successful by virtue of his own standards. So, why did he do what he did? He sees the traumatic vulnerability he had in his sons, and, making gut decisions that were typically below true conscious acknowledgment, rationalised his displaced resentment onto them with his weird obsession with Romans and their disgusting pederasty. This is post-hoc rationalisation. His own stunted moral comprehension causes him to be able to dismiss traumatising circumstances by minimalising or rationalising them; just as his mother did to his sister by saying nothing really happened. He takes it personally when his sons are arrested, as his sons, whom he sees as extensions of himself, and he punished them with abuse for demonstrated undesirable aspects he had in himself, and projecting this onto them, abuses them to relieve the trauma by rejecting blame and self-loathing. He becomes a worse person when he, upon having status and success and respect, continually finds imperfections in his sons or his life. This is due to his own unaddressed trauma which he attempts to ameliorate via imposing himself upon the world. Upon failure, or undesirable effects, or insufficient reward to dispel the unacknowledged feelings, he is unable to assume responsibility due to an unconscious egoic defence of resenting the world as a defence mechanism from traumatically violated boundaries in early life. His personality, as do other Dark Triad or otherwise toxic personalities, are - and do - grow worse with age due to their defence mechanisms either evolving at the increasingly sophisticated means via expense of others, or failing to actually work; as Jose called his mother wailing at what she did to him late into his adult life, showing how much it continues to keep affecting him. He should be considered an ESTJ ET/Fi: He constantly makes assessment of what is true based on what is the extroverted organisation of logic. In different terms, what others agree on to be true. In different terms, his desire for success is based on the metrics of what others considered successful, such as companies and having a big house and a beautiful woman with successful children. His children becoming criminals is something he takes personally due to inferior Fi driving his need for success to compensate for the traumatic devaluation of the ego - unconscious, of course - and therefore breaks down crying in the car in front of his sons. He flatly, and accurately, states that the dream has failed based on Lyle and Erik’s criminal delinquency and refusal to follow venues of success, such as business and being a politician. However, he doesn’t seem to comprehend why that’s the case. Si/Ne: He is a closeted homosexual or bisexual, but cannot accept these feelings as natural owing to his upbringing and cultural mores. So, he rationalises them by finding historical precedent in them, in that he has the right to do what he pleases to his sons due to them being his, and the Romans’ revolting sexual practices; albeit, not necessarily owing to homosexuality. He cannot simply accept a new idea without some tradition or precedent to it.
