1. WHAT FI ACTUALLY IS - FI INF IN HERMIONE Just because somebody is emotional or has strong values doesn't make them high Fi. The nature of Fi in the function stack is about the extent to which feelings and beliefs cloud the user's judgments, while in Hermione, even in the most emotionally charged situations, even when she couldn't stop crying, she was still having a very strong, cold logics about what they should and shouldn't do according to their goals and plans. e.g., When she's upset, crying, or deeply worried (in the hunt for Horcruxes; when Ron leaves), her primary concern is still about the plan, the objective facts, what they need to do next, and how to efficiently achieve their goals. Her emotions are present, but they don't derail her from her Te-driven need to organize, analyze, and execute. 2. TE DOM vs. FI INF - Te dom: Prioritizing the objective. She might be personally distraught, but she'll quickly pivot to "We must do X," "According to page 345, we need Y," or "This isn't logical, Harry." Her focus remains on external efficiency and reaching the goal. Her strong values (like fighting for house-elf rights or protecting her friends) are often expressed through her Te — by organizing S.P.E.W., researching solutions, and logically arguing for what she believes is the correct course of action, rather than just internally feeling it. e.g., When Fred died: "She had pulled Ron behind a tapestry. They seemed to be wrestling together, and for one mad second Harry thought that they were embracing again; then he saw that Hermione was trying to restrain Ron, to stop him running after Percy. "Listen to me - LISTEN RON!" "I wanna help... I wanna kill Death Eaters..." His face was contorted, smeared with dust and smoke, and he was shaking with rage and grief. "Ron, we're the only ones who can end it! Please, Ron, we need the snake, we've got to kill the snake!" said Hermione. But Harry knew how Ron felt: Pursuing another Horcrux could not bring the satisfaction of revenge; he too wanted to fight, to punish them, the people who had killed Fred, [...]. "We will fight!" Hermione said. "We'll have to, to reach the snake! But let's not lose sight now of what we're supposed to be d-doing! We're the only ones who can end it!" She was crying too, and she wiped her face on her torn and singed sleeve as she spoke, but she took great heaving breaths to calm herself as, still keeping a tight hold on Ron, she turned to Harry. "You need to find out where Voldemort is, because he'll have the snake with him, won't he? Do it, Harry - look inside him!"" //Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, chapter 32, The Elder Wand// This is one good example that highlights the stark contrast between Harry's Fi empathy (focused on feelings) and Hermione's Te empathy (focused on problem-solving). She cries, too, and she can feel how Ron is feeling, but her Te dom always pulls her mind back to the problem at hand and what practical thing to do to actually tackle it. If you observe how Percy reacts in this scene, you'll see as an ISTJ, he still has pretty high Fi compared to Hermione which his Te doesn't beat up (detail on Percy in the next post). - Fi inf: Hermione's inferior Fi explains her emotional outbursts and her intense, sometimes rigid, personal convictions. Inferior functions can be strong, but they are often less consciously controlled and can emerge in moments of stress or when one's core values are directly challenged. It's not her default mode of operation, but when it does show up, it can be powerful because it's a less developed, more volatile part of her psyche. 3. COGNITIVELY EXTRAVERTED Her focus was always placed outward: she tries to make Ron and Harry follows rules; she tries to engage everyone in fighting for the cause of S.P.E.W; and oh boy, let's not talk about when she becomes a Prefect and tries to control everyone in following rules including Fred and George 🤣🤣🤣 ESTJs do that because they are Te dom Fi inf, so they believe in a common, objective goal for everybody, they influence everybody to do something because they think that is the best way to live for everyone regardless of how each individual inner world is like (Fi inf), which is also the case for ENTJs. ISTJs, on the other hand, don't go out of their way or their comfort zone to influence people that much; they prioritize their Si - the comfort of the comfort and familiar zone - above everything else, which comes in pair with Ne inf, indicating a fear of the unknown and the new. They are a lot more rigid that ESTJs; they only go out of their ways to control people when it comes to their families or somebody they love a lot because then it comes from their personal Fi feeling and concerns for the person and afraid of losing their loved ones to the unknown scary worlds outside of their comfort little pond of Si.
