Given how he self closeted himself rather than join the wave of liberation at the time, points more to Si rather than Ni in my opinion, he was focused on the present and near future rather than the overarching larger societal patterns. Things were also even more open in Europe at the time due to the proximity to filtered communism, as gay ppl were still persecuted behind the iron curtain but in western European artistic circles it was way more open than in USA.
