When Su first suggests to him to go out on prom with Carrie, he's against it due to how Carrie has been used to so many people making fun of her that she'll just think it's another joke. As a result, he thought it'd be both fake and disrespectful to her. When he eventually meets Carrie, he tries to appeal to her by first calling her different, and then calling her mysterious when she doesn't believe him. He eventually convinced her to go out on prom with him with this and telling her that Su thought she's interesting. Tommy was respectful towards Carrie's boundaries and is able to adjust to fit the environment he's in.
