The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) is a film I'm waiting for Popcorninbed to make a reaction video to. When will this come to pass? Who knows? I hear the voice of growth. In time. Anyway, I'm here to type Tom Ripley, to tickle my chin, and to pause and reflect sullenly or maybe just say something original. The jury is still out, but here goes. Tom Ripley : "If I could just go back... if I could rub everything out... starting with myself." This quote examples Tom's use of Subjective Knowledge/Expectancy (Ni). ✅ Note how, throughout the film, what he sees happening between himself and others is insanely personal in its conception indicating he is heavily working off of subjective knowledge and expectancy (Ni). He wants to rub his whole existence out if how he sees himself is slightly disappeared in the eyes of others. This is Ni dominant. His Ni isn't augmenting another function, but it takes precedence. Tom Ripley : "I always thought it would be better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody." This quote examples Tom's use of Objective Metrics/Values/Limitation (Fe). ✅ Note how Tom prefers to be disingenuous with his values and he is always trying to get ahead of tension and in the process inadvertently causing it. This habit shows he lacks Fi. He doesn't care about what he individually feels for relativity. He seeks external validation where it concerns relative values. A big motivating factor in why he turns into a killer is he is not getting validated by the object anymore and feels he is right back at square one. ✅ Note how he is referred to as having been a "leech" as he ignores objective potential (ignoring Ne) and returns with objective values toward his personal expectations (Fe augmenting Ni) socially suffocating others because he is assuming his inclusion in relationships to his detriment. Somebody compared him to Joe Goldberg from the show You, which I think is apt. Peter : "Can you imagine, though, if he did kill Freddie, what that must be like? Just to wake up every morning. I mean, how can you? Just wake up and be a person? Drink your coffee?" Tom Ripley : "Well, whatever you do, however terrible, however hurtful, it all makes sense, doesn't it, in your head? You never meet anybody who thinks they're a bad person." This dialogue examples Tom's use of Subjective Optics/Vantage (Ti). ✅ Note how Peter is asking Tom a hypothetical from an Fi perspective wondering about how one would personally deal with the personal evaluation of one's dynamic self to come and Tom replies with a Ti perspective expressing a reality of a static impression of self, NOT a dynamic impression of self. Tom Ripley : "Don't you just take the past and put it in a room in a basement and lock the door and never go in there? That's what I do. And then you meet someone special and all you want to do is to toss them the key and say, "Open up, step inside," but you can't because it's dark. There's demons, and if anybody saw how ugly it is... I keep wanting to do that: fling the door open, just let light in and clean everything out." This quote examples Tom's inferior function of Objective Opportunism/Aestheticism (Se). ✅ Note he wants to scale things out and be the life of the party. He admires this ability (Se) in others. Tom desires to live in the present and throw caution to the wind, but he can only do that if he's lying about who he is. He can't be exciting as himself for himself. This is what the repression of Se looks like. He can only impress being spontaneous if he's spurred on by others. He can't engage in the world of the present unless he's living out a fiction that removes his attention from his real and insecure image of himself. Tom Ripley : "First of all I know there's something. That evening when we played chess for instance it was obvious." Reflecting on what I see to judge on, Tom Ripley is most probable an INFJ.
