Biography
Pope Urban II (1035 – 29 July 1099), born Odo of Châtillon or Otho de Lagery (Celli-Fraentzel 1932, p. 97.) , was Pope from 12 March 1088 to his death in 1099. As the Pope he would have to deal with many issues including the antipope Clement III, infighting of various Christian nations, and the Muslim incursions into Europe. He is best known for initiating the First Crusade (1095–99).
