Biography
Benedict of Nursia (who lived from c.March 2, 480 – c.March 21, 547 AD) was a late Antique Christian monastic who is renowned for being the founder of the Benedictine congregation. St Benedict founded 12 communities for monks at Subiaco in Italy, before founding the monastery at Monte Cassino in southern Italy. The Benedictine Order emerged following St Benedict's death as a confederation of autonomous congregations St Benedict's magnum opus, the Rule of St Benedict, contains an extensive set of rules for his monks to follow. Heavily influenced by the writings of St John Cassian, the Rule also reflects an influence from strong the Rule of the Master. The main source of information outside of the Benedictine Rule is derived from Pope St Gregory I's Dialogues, which is hagiographic in nature.
