On the one hand, they’re a badass. They have cool clothes. They make a grand entrance. And they do it in half the time the hero does.On the other hand, they’re a little (or a lot) less idealistic than The Hero. So, why are they a loner? Generally it turns out to be some kind of betrayal, or maybe they’ve been through some difficult times in their life and now they just want to be alone. The Ineffectual Loner does not understand Team Spirit, or just isn't concerned. The problem is this attitude makes someone pretty single-minded, and they're afraid to trust anyone as an ally, lest they be a liability/distraction. They're also extremely susceptible to villains who know how to think this way. They may catch on eventually, but they'll be a tool for a bit.
