In agreement with the previous comment about Gon being a Type 8 although I do think his 8ness is subtle at first. Of course, with a system like the Enneagram the defense mechanisms of a type don't start appearing until the person goes in the average and lower ranges of health. While he seems like a Type 7, I believe Gon is a Type 8 overall. Yes, he wanted to find his Dad and he is optimistic many times throughout the anime, but along the journey I noticed various traits of a Type 8 with Gon. He really wasn't setting out to do things for fun over the course of HxH as a way to escape from pain and he doesn't really have issues regarding security and other head triad aspects. Achieving autonomy by asserting himself against the environment? Yes, that is Gon. He is attracted to power and endurance, wanting to prove his strength and was willing to take on any challenge even if the odds were against him. He doesn't demonstrate a fear of missing out which is associated with Type 7s, but rather Gon is afraid of being vulnerable or being weak. His fear of being vulnerable/weak is highlighted early on in the Hunter Exam with his bouts against Hisoka as well as his fight with Hanzo later during that arc. He flat out approaches Illumi after the Hunter Exam and straight up breaks his arm because his "people" or in this case Killua was being harmed and he stood up for what he thought was right. His continuous need to stand up for those that are helpless (like in his disgust towards the Phantom Troupe and their actions) is rooted in the Type 8's sense of black and white morality. In addition, I can't help but not ignore how this is related to the Type 8's reactivity in harmonic groups; Gon stands strong against all that threatens his autonomy and others. After suffering several loses and not being able to protect those he loves, such as Kite, Gon falls into despair. His entire breakdown during the Chimera Ant arc was the result of the Type 8's core fear coming true and he starts showing signs of disintegration to Type 5, overthinking and withdrawing from others. Indeed the nihilistic nature and brutality he unleashes on Pitou demonstrates how far an 8 can go into setting up what's "right" when their people are messed with or in this case killed. "I never imagined being weak was so painful" says it all.

Gon Freecss (ゴン゠フリークス, Gon Furīkusu) is a Rookie Hunter and the son of Ging Freecss. Finding his father is Gon's motivation in becoming a Hunter. Gon is an athletic, rustic, and friendly boy who is searching for adventure. His flaws lie in his temper and impulsive nature. Gon sometimes fails to think things through and such actions lead to him suffering. Though possessing talent far beyond the norm for his age, anytime his abilities are challenged, he feels as if he has to prove his antagonist wrong. He continually strives to obtain greater power, often becoming exceptionally stronger in his anger. But Gon's anger also leads to some extremely reckless tendencies. When his emotions are ignited, Gon becomes irrational and completely oblivious to anything else.
