I always liked Julian, but I like him more and more every time I rewatch and now he's maybe my favourite character. I think he's a very clear INFJ. His Fe is truly awe-inspiring -- both friends and enemies praise him for his tact. I get really impressed by how he just naturally knows the right way to react to something -- for example, there's a quick little moment where Bucock tells him he believes he'll soon be in hell, and Julian just completely ignores it and immediately changes the subject. I'm jealous of his ability to so effortlessly understand the proper way to handle a potentially awkward moment. But despite his great use of it, Fe is not his dominant function. He's not a forceful leader -- he uses his Fe in a passive, receptive way, letting others speak and not giving his own opinion until asked. Ni can be a harder function to spot since it's all interior and (in INxJs) only seen indirectly, in the use they make of their Fe or Te, but I think it's clearly Julian's native element. It's in everything he does, but I'll give a few particular examples. When the Empire is besieging Iserlohn, he immediately sees through their strategy, but might've kept his insight to himself if Schennkopp hadn't asked (Ni stronger than Fe -- Julian didn't trust his ability to lead). En route to Phezzan, as Julian wakes up he's planning what to do for breakfast. Having a plan for the immediate future is natural to Ni doms. When Yang decides to obey the ceasefire order and not kill Reinhard, Julian supports his decision because he can immediately, instinctively and intuitively see the long term (stretching out far into future history) implications of the decision, and most importantly, he doesn't see the actual event here-and-now (Se) so much as its deeper meaning and precedent. To Julian, it is not a question of Yang killing Reinhard, but of a soldier disregarding the orders of a democratically elected government. If Yang can do it, he can hardly complain about anyone else doing it, and then democracy is over for good.
